Chapter 43: Parts of an ATM Machine

An ATM has these primary components:

Components Explanation/function Example
Topper A lighted sign that is attached to the top of on ATM to attract attention

Upper cabinet A separate closed area that houses the printer, CPU, card reader and modem. The upper cabinet is separated from the lower cabinet and the cash.

printer A thermal printer that prints the receipts. Does not need ink refills. The printer is seen in the picture as the metal rectangular box with a label on it.

keypad used for the customer to enter information for a transaction and used by the ATM owner to program the machine
Modem Connects the ATM through the phone line to the network.  
Card reader Reads the magnetic stripe on the customer's cards. The card reader is the small green circuit board at the lower left corner of this picture. The monitor controls are located at the upper right of the picture.
CPU performs the computer processing and encryption of the customer's information  
Receipt Paper printer roll
Lower cabinet A safe that houses the cash dispenser and the cash cassette

Cash dispenser received instructions from the CPU to dispense cash to the customer

Cash cassette (or drawer) Holds the cash

Lock An electronic lock or dial lock is used to secure the lower cabinet

Fascia A plastic door used to cover the lower cabinet.

Reject Cassette Holds bills that were "rejected" by the dispenser during a cash dispense. These bills may be rejected because they are torn or damaged.


Tranax 1500

 

Monitor The screen that displays information for the customer (and ATM owner). Located in the upper cabinet. Most are monochrome (2 color). Full color monitors are an option.
